How to Avoid Skin Irritation from Your Sensor or Pump

How to Avoid Skin Irritation from Your Sensor or Pump

If you live with type 1 diabetes, you’re probably familiar with the red marks, itching, or even open sores that can occur where your CGM or insulin pump sits.

Skin irritation from sensors and adhesives is a common – and often underestimated – issue. But with the right steps, you can protect your skin and keep using your tech without discomfort.

1. Rotate your sites

Change the placement of your sensor or pump as often as possible. This gives your skin time to recover and reduces the risk of long-term irritation.

2. Try a diabetes patch

Using a diabetes patch like SensiPatch creates a barrier between your skin and the adhesive. This can prevent redness, itching, and discomfort – or help soothe the skin after removal.

3. Gentle Omnipod skin care

If you’re using an Omnipod, make sure to clean your skin thoroughly before and after use. Avoid scented products and stick to alcohol-free, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers.

4. Keep skin dry

Always apply sensors or infusion sets to completely dry skin. Moisture can increase the risk of irritation and reduce adhesive strength.

5. Remove adhesives gently

When removing your device, do it slowly and gently – ideally using an adhesive remover. Pulling too hard can damage your skin and make it more sensitive.

Already dealing with irritation? SensiPatch can be applied after device removal to soothe, protect, and accelerate healing. In a clinical study from Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, more than 20% of users saw complete healing in just 3 days.
